Good news!

Duncan's appointment with a very nice surgeon went very well this morning. She thinks his leg will heal well without surgery, and because he's so young it should heal quickly. He'll need to have another x-ray later this week to be sure nothing has shifted, but if all goes well he may only need to have his splint on for a couple of weeks, with a few more of taking it easy.

We put an e-collar on him at night, and he doesn't object to it as much as I expected he would. During the day when we can watch him it comes off. He's being so good, and hasn't really tried to chew or lick his splint at all. He's getting lots of snuggling time, and since his pills have left him sleepy he seems quite happy to settle in on a lap and doze off. That may not last, though; his appetite has reappeared, so his energy level may not be far behind!

Broken leg

Yesterday was a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day worthy of Alexander himself. (Do you kids remember the many, many times I read that book to you?) Duncan was playing with his toys in living room yesterday morning when he somehow fell over and started screaming. We headed off to the vet, where as usual he got lots of attention and sympathy as well as great care. (I could tell he was going to be well looked after when Dr. Susan told him they were going to the back to see "Auntie Erin" for x-rays!)

The x-ray showed the problem - he broke the tibia in his right hind leg. The sedative that he got for the x-ray knocked him right out, so he didn't even notice the nice Christmas splint Erin put on his leg.

And he was such a good little guy - despite his reputation for puppy-nipping with a mouth full of razor blades at home, he didn't snap or nip at all when he was hurt.

He's had a pretty good night, waking up yelping a few times but quickly soothed back to sleep each time. He absolutely gobbles down his pain pills (or at least the pill pockets they're hidden in). Later this morning he has an appointment with an orthopedic specialist in Mississauga, and we'll find out if he needs surgery to pin the bone.

Keeping this active little guy quiet for several weeks is going to be a challenge!

Duncan 1, Chair 0

Can't go round it...

Why would you walk all the way around the coffee table when the shortest distance between two points is a straight line? Duncan spends a lot of time climbing in, out, around, and over the legs of the coffee table (and occasionally bumps his head on the glass ceiling). It's a bit of a problem when all four of his legs end up in the middle, though. It's going to be even more of a problem when he grows a bit more!

Embracing technology

This little guy seems to like gadgets. He poses for the camera like a total little ham, which makes it hard to get candid shots! He also seems to like computers. Megan's laptop was a nice warm place for a snooze.

Wildlife Control

Terrier instincts start early! Duncan kills lots of "vermin" every day. It's a bit worrying that his favourite toy seems to be the skunk, given Kerry's unfortunate habit of tangling with the real thing (she took on her last one just a few weeks before she turned 15, and almost got out of the way in time!)

Laundry!

We seem to be going through a lot more towels than we used to, with all these little puddles. Duncan is perfectly willing to help with all the extra laundry, though!
